🩸Chips Got Smoked, Oil Woke Up, Earnings Season & more
Semis lead a 2.9% Nasdaq drop as Iran sends crude past $80.

Chips took the beating this week. The S&P 500 closed Friday at 7,457.69, down about 1.5% on the week, as semiconductors got smoked on fears that the AI hyperscalers are about to tighten their wallets on infrastructure spend. The Nasdaq wore it worst, sliding roughly 2.9%, while the Dow held up better at around -1% and finished Friday at 52,146.42. The Russell 2000 barely flinched (-0.39% to 2,962.99), which tells you money rotated rather than ran for the exits.
The other headline: oil. WTI jumped 2.77% Friday to $81.14 and finished the week up double digits as the Iran conflict dragged into a sixth day of U.S. airstrikes and the Strait of Hormuz stayed effectively shut. Higher crude means higher inflation risk, which means the rate-cut bulls got a little quieter. The VIX popped 12% Friday to 18.77. Still not panic territory, but it woke up.
Under the surface it was a rotation week, not a collapse. Eight of eleven S&P sectors actually finished green, led by Energy and Consumer Staples. Netflix cratered 11% after guiding for another quarter of slowing sales, while Travelers ripped 9% on a big earnings beat and dragged Progressive and Allstate up with it. Defensives and value got the bid. Growth and tech paid the bill.
TLDR Stock Market Weekly Update - July 17, 2026
📉 Market Trends
Chips Lead the Selloff: Semiconductors drove the weakness on fears that AI hyperscalers scale back infrastructure spending. The whole AI-capex trade is suddenly on trial.
Rotation, Not Rout: Money moved out of tech and into Energy and Consumer Staples. Small caps held their ground while the Nasdaq bled, a classic risk-reshuffle rather than a full risk-off.
Oil Is Back in the Driver's Seat: Iran tensions and a closed Strait of Hormuz pushed crude into the low $80s, reviving the inflation conversation nobody wanted back.
Earnings Set the Tone: Netflix (-11%) and Travelers (+9%) showed this is a stock-picker's tape. Reactions are sharp and one-sided, so guidance matters more than the print.
📊 Technical Levels & Market Signals
S&P Cracks Below Recent Highs: The index lost roughly 1.5% and Friday's close at 7,457.69 puts it back inside the prior consolidation range. Watch whether buyers defend that zone or let it slip.
Nasdaq Takes the Most Damage: A 2.9% weekly drop makes tech the clear laggard. Until the chip names stabilize, the Nasdaq stays the weakest link technically.
Small Caps Relative Strength: The Russell 2000 down just 0.39% is the quiet tell. Relative strength in small caps during a tech washout is worth tracking into next week.
VIX Wakes Up: A 12% Friday jump to 18.77 shows nerves rising, but sub-20 says this is caution, not fear. A push above 20 would change the conversation.
💰 Economic Data, Rates & the Fed
Fed on Hold, Blackout On: The FOMC meets July 28-29, so the coming week sits inside the pre-meeting blackout. No Fed speakers to move the tape. Rates stay at 3.50-3.75% and markets expect no change at the meeting.
One More Cut Still Priced: Markets hold roughly 65% odds of one additional 25bp cut by year-end, most likely September or October, but rising oil is chipping away at that conviction.
Yields Firming: The 10-year sits near 4.5% and the 2-year near 4.1% (approximate, based on early-July Fed data). Higher crude and sticky inflation risk keep upward pressure on the long end.
Data-Light Week Ahead: Next week is thin on releases, which hands the wheel to earnings. Housing and durable goods are the only real macro prints.

So why silver?
While most investors associate silver with jewelry or precious metals, it's also one of the world's most essential industrial metals.
Silver plays a critical role in AI servers, data center infatstructure, semiconductors, solar panels, electric vehicles, and other technologies driving today's economy.
As AI infrastructure, renewable energy, and electrification continue to expand, silver demand has been influenced by it.

If you're looking to gain exposure to silver without buying physical silver, Global X offers several ETFs that provide exposure to silver miners and broader commodity-related companies.
Their silver miner lineup includes SLVX, SVCC, and SVCL.
For broader exposure to commodities, COMX, CMCC, and CMCL provide exposure to companies across areas such as energy, mining, metals, and other related sectors.
